Vintage Kuba
SKU: Kuba #2
Framed Vintage plush or cut pile African kuba cloth in black with gold
to orange design threads. This piece is in the process of being
professionally framed. A new picture will be posted upon completion. The
cloth is in very good condition and measures 32.5" x 17.5".
|
| The
frame will be a simple black wood frame. The cloth is mounted
(handstitched) to a stretched linen back cloth creating about a three-inch
border between the cloth and the frame. Finished size of the frame & cloth
is approximately 37" x 23" x 1 3/4". A beautiful authentic piece that will show
well in any decor. Authentic Kuba from Zaire is hand made sculptured fabric
woven of Raffia palm. The age-old process is a time consuming method of
producing ceremonial cloths. The "yarns," or palm fibers, are woven into a base
cloth on simple vertical looms by the men of the Congo. The women then use a
combination of flat grass weaving and cut loop weave to produce intricate
geometric designs that have a plush look, but are definitely not cuddly. The
Kuba people use other techniques including applique, reversed applique, and
embroideries of various styles. Sometimes they will use a combination of styles
in the same cloth. They may continue the decoration with tie-dye or sewing in
beads or cowry shells. The cut pile shown here, sometimes referred to as "Shoowa
Velvet" is one of the most highly prized cloths by textile collectors throughout
the world. Kuba cloth has been collected and displayed by artists and European
nobility for centuries. They can be displayed in a number of ways, including
pillow tops, wall hangings, furniture toppers with glass covering, stitched to a
background cloth and framed, or placed between two pieces of glass for hanging.
It is not uncommon to see new Kuba plush pillows displayed in designer rooms in
such fine decorating magazines as Traditional Home, Architectural Digest, Decor,
and others.
